Protective Vs Covert Surveillance: What’s the difference?

Protective surveillance is a type of security that enables the protection of a person, a structure, or an asset from a strategically safe distance. The people involved are aware that they are being watched. However, covert surveillance is when the people being watched are not aware that this is happening. There are two types of covert surveillance. These are: “directed surveillance” (watching you in public) and intrusive surveillance (monitoring you at home).

Examples of covert surveillance

As previously mentioned, there are two types of covert surveillance, aka secret surveillance. These are directed and intrusive surveillance. Depending on the circumstance, they are carried out in various ways. Intrusive surveillance is often carried out by using an eavesdropping device, in a private vehicle, or on residential premises. Directed surveillance is predominantly conducted by watching the specific target from a safe distance.  Such methods are subject to a strict control and oversight regime.

Examples of protective surveillance

When faced with hostile threats and feeling unsafe, protective surveillance is the best option for those who don’t want to draw attention to themselves with a protection team. Protective surveillance can be used in a variety of ways, but it typically entails the security team operating at a distance from the ‘principle’, or client, while staying strategically safe to enable a quick response in the event of an emergency. It is essentially a form of ‘arms-length’ protection.

People who choose protective surveillance may feel uncomfortable with a close and personal form of protection, want to keep their protection confidential without others knowing, or fear offending their host by appearing over protected. Your safety and comfort are the top priorities of these services, so you should act in your own best interests.

Protective surveillance involves our team of male and female detectives covertly safeguarding a person, building or asset from a strategically safe location. We work with the individual, who is fully aware that they are being watched by UK private detectives. Protective surveillance is less obtrusive and allows the subject to get about their day, without feeling any danger. We are not just limited to the capital, we operate all across the UK.
